What happened
HHS published Secretary Kennedy swearing in Dr. Mehmet Oz to lead the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services on April 21, 2025. In the statement carried in HHS’s description, Kennedy says: ‘We spend more today on health care than any other country in the world, yet we have the worst health outcomes. Chronic disease is rising and we’re not getting our bang for the buck. Dr. Oz as head of CMS is going to change all that. Welcome to the team Dr. Oz. Let’s Make America Healthy Again.’
Why it matters
Oz’s installation at CMS put Kennedy’s chosen administrator over Medicare and Medicaid — the largest spending portfolio inside HHS and the lever for the pair’s prior-authorization and pricing work.
