What happened

President Donald Trump participated in a bilateral meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Apr. 7, 2025 — Netanyahu’s second White House visit of the term — carried on the White House channel after the two leaders had lunch and met with their staffs. The President said they had come to some good solutions and conclusions and had held great discussions on Iran and on trade.

Netanyahu opened on tariffs, telling the President directly: “We will eliminate the trade deficit with the United States. We intend to do it very quickly,” and Israel would also eliminate a variety of trade barriers that had been put up. On Gaza, Netanyahu spoke about the hostages — the families he said he speaks to every day and the agony they and the hostages are in — and said the two leaders wanted to get them all out, crediting the President’s representative Steve Witkoff by name.

Why it matters

The meeting is the trade program reaching a head of government in person: Israel’s prime minister stood in the Oval Office and volunteered, on camera, to zero out his country’s trade surplus with the United States — the outcome the reciprocal-tariff policy was built to produce — while the hostage file and Iran remained the meeting’s security core.

Scoreboard watch

Scoreboard candidate: Netanyahu’s on-camera pledge to eliminate Israel’s trade deficit with the United States and remove trade barriers is a dated, verifiable commitment made to the President. Flagged for the scoreboard; the entry itself stays review-gated.
