What happened
President Donald Trump took questions from the press aboard Air Force One on Apr. 3, 2025, carried on the White House channel. He opened by holding up the new gold card - “Five million - for $5 million this could be yours” - said he was its first buyer, and said it would be out in less than two weeks.
On the market reaction to the Liberation Day tariffs, the President said the drop was to be expected: the country had inherited “a terrible economy,” had lost 90,000 plants and about 6 million jobs since NAFTA, and was “a sick patient that went through an operation on Liberation Day.” The operation was over, he said, and “now we let it settle in,” pointing to plant construction already starting. He said chip tariffs would start “very soon” and pharmaceutical tariffs would follow, that every country had called since the reciprocal tariffs were set, and that he was open to deals where a country offered “something that’s so phenomenal.” He also said he believed Iran wanted direct talks rather than intermediaries, that Presidents Zelenskyy and Putin were each ready to make a deal, and that falling interest rates, grocery, egg, and gasoline prices were “a lot of good things happening,” as he put it.
Why it matters
The gaggle is the President’s first extended defense of the reciprocal-tariff program the day after Liberation Day, and the first on-camera display of the $5 million gold card, with a release timing - out in less than two weeks - stated on the record.
Scoreboard watch
Scoreboard watch: the gold card’s “less than two weeks” release timing, and the statements that chip tariffs start very soon and pharmaceutical tariffs follow, are recorded here as checkable items as stated by the President.
