What happened

President Donald Trump hosted the White House Iftar dinner, carried on the White House channel in an upload dated Mar. 28, 2025. “Good evening and welcome to this magnificent dinner,” he said. “As we honor the Islamic Holy Month of Ramadan, let me begin by saying to our Muslim friends, of which I have many tonight… Ramadan Mubarak.” He thanked the hundreds of thousands of Muslim Americans who, as he put it, supported the administration in record numbers in the 2024 presidential election.

The President singled out two Michigan mayors in the room: Amer Ghalib of Hamtramck, whom he said would be the next ambassador to Kuwait, and Bill Bazzi of Dearborn Heights, whom he said would be the next ambassador to Tunisia - “Both great countries… you’re going to have a tremendous time,” as he told them. He said his administration was “engaged in relentless diplomacy to forge a lasting peace in the Middle East, building on the historic Abraham Accords,” and closed by describing Ramadan and the nightly iftar as a tradition exemplifying “the beautiful spirit of all three Abrahamic faith,” before the dinner was served.

Why it matters

The Iftar dinner is the administration’s Ramadan observance at the White House, and the President used it to put two ambassador picks - Ghalib for Kuwait and Bazzi for Tunisia - on the public record in front of the assembled ambassadors and Muslim community leaders.
