What happened

President Donald Trump delivered remarks on auto tariffs at the White House on Mar. 26, 2025, carried on the White House channel, hours after the Women’s History Month event in the same building. “This is the beginning of Liberation Day in America,” he said, announcing that the United States would charge a 25 percent tariff on all cars not made in the United States, rising from the existing 2.5 percent base, with no tariff on cars built in the United States.

The President said plants that had been heading to Mexico, Canada, and other countries were now being built in the United States instead, pointing to Honda’s new plant in Indiana as an example he credited to the policy. On chips, he said the largest chip manufacturer from Taiwan was spending almost $200 billion building in the United States, largely in Arizona, which he said would give the United States almost 40 percent of the chip market. He previewed April 2 as the fuller Liberation Day announcement.

Why it matters

The auto-tariff announcement is the opening move of the tariff program the President unveiled in full on April 2, 2025: a 25 percent rate on imported cars, stated on the record with the build-in-America exemption that the administration has repeated at every signing since.
