What happened
HUD announced that Secretary Scott Turner and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem signed the ‘American Housing Programs for American Citizens’ Memorandum of Understanding, which HUD said ends the misappropriation of taxpayer dollars to benefit illegal aliens instead of American citizens. HUD stated that under the agreement it will provide a full-time staff member to assist operations at the Incident Command Center, establishing an interagency partnership to facilitate data sharing and ensure taxpayer-funded housing programs are not used to benefit illegal aliens. In the statement HUD published, Turner said American tax dollars should be used for the benefit of American citizens, especially on housing, and that HUD would work closely with DHS to put American citizens first.
Why it matters
The MOU is the housing flank of the administration’s immigration-enforcement program: eligibility for public and subsidized housing, enforced through HUD-DHS data sharing. Its test is how eligibility checks change who actually receives HUD-funded housing.
