What happened

President Donald Trump and Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry delivered remarks at the White House on Mar. 24, 2025, carried on the White House channel, joined by Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chairman Chung Eui-sun, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and Majority Leader Steve Scalise. The President announced that Hyundai would invest $5.8 billion in a new steel plant in Louisiana - its first steel mill in the United States - producing more than 2.7 million metric tons of steel a year and creating more than 1,400 jobs, as he stated them, supplying Hyundai’s auto plants in Alabama and Georgia.

The Louisiana plant is part of a larger $21 billion Hyundai investment in the United States over the next couple of years, including expanded Georgia auto manufacturing, the President said. He framed the announcement as proof the tariff program works: Hyundai would produce steel and cars in America and, as a result, would not have to pay tariffs.

Why it matters

The Hyundai announcement is one of the largest single foreign-investment pledges of the administration’s first months, and the President tied it directly to the tariff policy on the record - the claim the scoreboard tracks against the plant’s construction.

Scoreboard watch

Scoreboard watch: the Hyundai figures as stated on Mar. 24, 2025 ($5.8 billion Louisiana steel plant; more than 2.7 million metric tons a year; more than 1,400 jobs; $21 billion total U.S. investment) - flagged for the scoreboard editors; the entry itself remains review-gated.
