What happened

President Donald Trump participated in an education event at the White House on Mar. 20, 2025, carried on the White House channel, and signed an executive order to begin eliminating the Federal Department of Education. “Today we take a very historic action that was 45 years in the making,” he said, introducing Secretary of Education Linda McMahon as, he hoped, the last Secretary of Education. Governors including Greg Abbott, Ron DeSantis, Mike DeWine, Jeff Landry, Bill Lee, Brad Little, Jim Pillen, and Kim Reynolds attended, along with members of Congress and state attorneys general, as the President named them.

At the same event, the President said he had signed a proclamation honoring the 250th anniversary of Patrick Henry’s “Give me liberty or give me death” speech and an executive order to dramatically increase production of critical minerals and rare earths, and he said a rare-earths agreement with Ukraine would be signed very shortly, as he stated it.

Why it matters

The signing is the administration’s central education action: the order to begin eliminating the department created in 1979, signed in front of the governors who would receive its functions, with the critical-minerals order announced in the same remarks.
