What happened

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller took reporters’ questions outside the White House on March 19, 2025, in Roll Call Factbase Videos’ recording (archival upload, May 12, 2025). Challenged with a report that at least one man on the deportation flights had no criminal record in the United States or Venezuela, Miller rejected the premise: ‘Is it your position that a member of Tren de Aragua who is in our United States illegally should be allowed to commit crimes limitlessly?’ he asked, arguing the administration’s job is ’to send the terrorists out before anyone else gets raped or murdered.’

On the court fight, Miller said the President stood by his call to impeach the district judge who ordered the flights halted, arguing that a single district judge out of some 700 ‘cannot set policy for the entire nation’ on national-security matters, and that the Supreme Court should stop what he called an assault on democracy from ‘radical rogue judges.’ He also said foreign nationals in the United States are prohibited from supporting a designated terrorist organization such as Hamas, and condemned what the President has called left-wing domestic terrorism over the Tesla attacks ‘in the clearest and most forceful terms.’

Why it matters

Two days after the March 17 gaggle, this shorter exchange is the administration’s direct answer to the first reported wrongful-deportation case and to the judiciary’s pushback — Miller’s position that gang membership, not a criminal record, is the removal standard, and that district-court orders cannot govern the flights.

Scoreboard watch

Scoreboard watch: the administration’s deportation standard as stated March 19, 2025 — Tren de Aragua membership as sufficient for removal regardless of criminal record, as Miller framed it — flagged for the scoreboard editors; the entry itself remains review-gated.
