What happened

President Donald Trump hosted the White House St. Patrick’s Day reception on Mar. 12, 2025, carried on the White House channel, welcoming Taoiseach Micheal Martin of Ireland and his wife Mary on what the President noted was the Taoiseach’s first official visit to the White House. He wished the guests an early happy St. Patrick’s Day, said as a lifelong New Yorker that nobody knows the Irish better than he does, and spoke of his many trips to Ireland and his property there.

The President introduced members of his cabinet in attendance, naming Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as proud Irish-Americans, along with Attorney General Pam Bondi and Energy Secretary Chris Wright, whom he credited on camera with oil at $65 a barrel that day, as he stated it.

Why it matters

The reception is the ceremonial centerpiece of the annual Ireland visit - the Taoiseach’s first official White House trip of the term, recorded alongside the day’s Shamrock ceremony and the congressional Friends of Ireland luncheon.
