What happened

Energy Secretary Chris Wright delivered remarks at CERAWeek 2025 in Houston, Texas, in the Department of Energy’s upload of the March 10, 2025 session, and took questions from the conference host afterward. Wright opened by saying he was honored to serve as President Trump’s 17th Secretary of Energy and that energy is not a sector of the economy but the sector that enables all the others. He rejected the labels climate denier and climate skeptic, calling himself a climate realist, and said the administration would treat climate change as a global physical phenomenon that is a side effect of building the modern world, ending what he described as the previous administration’s policies that imposed sacrifices for, in his calculation, perhaps only a few hundredths of a degree of temperature reduction by 2100, as he stated the math.

Wright put natural gas at 25% of global primary energy and 43% of U.S. electricity, and credited it, through nitrogen fertilizer, with fully half of global food production, as he stated the figures; wind and solar, he said, supply roughly 3% of global primary energy on the measure he uses. He announced the administration’s fourth LNG export action that day — approval improving the Delfin offshore Louisiana LNG export terminal, as the transcript renders the project name — in addition to earlier actions on the Commonwealth and Golden Pass projects and on LNG bunkering. He said the administration was working to launch an American nuclear renaissance in fission and fusion, pursuing next-generation geothermal, reversing appliance rules he said forced consumers to pay more for inferior performance, and reversing the mandates he said were forcing electric-vehicle purchases.

In the conversation that followed, Wright said fusion would see net energy production in the relatively near future, described the National Energy Dominance Council — set up, he said, with Interior Secretary Burgum’s insistence — as the body to clear permitting for the infrastructure the AI race requires, and traced the shale revolution’s efficiency gain as a fall from roughly 1,600 natural gas rigs to roughly 100 with a doubling of production, as he stated the figures. He said he had visited three national laboratories and intended to visit the other 14 within nine months.

Why it matters

CERAWeek is the global energy industry’s flagship conference, and Wright used its main stage for the administration’s fullest early statement of doctrine: more production and infrastructure, LNG approvals as the running proof, and climate policy re-founded, in his framing, on arithmetic rather than alarm.
