What happened
President Donald Trump delivered remarks and took questions in the Oval Office on Mar. 7, 2025, carried on the White House channel. Staff Secretary Will Scharf first presented an executive order prepared for the President’s signature that afternoon directing the Departments of Education and the Treasury to modify the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program so that people working for organizations engaged in illegal or improper activities - supporting illegal immigration or foreign terrorist organizations, as Scharf presented them - could not benefit from the program.
The President then took questions on the manufacturing turnaround, which he said was taking hold weeks into the term, citing the 90,000 plants and factories closed since the beginning of NAFTA, as he stated it, and fielded a question on his call for Congress to overturn the CHIPS Act. On Iran, he said the United States was down to the final moments and that Iran could not be allowed a nuclear weapon, saying he would rather see a peace deal than the other option. Asked about pardoning Derek Chauvin, he said he had not heard about it. On Ukraine, he said settling the war came before any question of security guarantees, putting the toll at 2,000 lives a week, as he stated it.
Why it matters
The session records three positions in the President’s own words on a single day: the loan-forgiveness order’s rationale as presented by his staff secretary, the final-moments framing on Iran, and the settle-first ordering on Ukraine guarantees - each a tracked position of the administration.
