What happened
HUD published Secretary Scott Turner’s remarks in Los Angeles on the wildfire recovery under the title ‘HUD - @SecretaryTurner Delivers Remarks on LA Wildfires’; HUD published no description for the upload. In the remarks, a transcript of which was reviewed for this page, Turner said he had toured the Altadena area and met residents, pastors and local officials, and said red tape and bureaucracy had, in his word, ‘choked’ the recovery. He announced, as he stated it, a congressional investigation into FireAid, the $100 million fund raised for fire victims, saying Congress would examine where the money went.
Why it matters
Wildfire recovery in Los Angeles is HUD’s largest disaster-recovery test of Turner’s tenure, and the remarks put the Secretary on record in the affected community itself — blaming permitting and bureaucracy for the pace of rebuilding and promising federal scrutiny of the relief money.
