What happened

President Donald Trump held a joint press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India at the White House on Feb. 13, 2025, carried on the White House channel. The President announced a framework to strengthen ties, the U.S.-India COMPACT for the 21st century, and said the United States would be increasing military sales to India by many billions of dollars starting that year and paving the way to ultimately provide India with F-35 stealth fighters. He also announced that his administration had approved the extradition of one of the plotters of the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack to face justice in India.

On trade, the President put the U.S. trade deficit with India at almost $100 billion, as he stated it, and said the two leaders had agreed to begin negotiations toward an agreement and a level playing field, with the difference made up easily through sales of oil and gas, of which he said the United States would hopefully become India’s number one supplier. Modi, as he stated it, set the target of more than doubling bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030 and said the two teams would work on concluding a mutually beneficial trade agreement very soon.
