What happened
President Donald Trump hosted Elon Musk in the Oval Office on Feb. 11, 2025, carried on the White House channel (uploaded Feb. 12), to sign what the President called a very important deal: the DOGE executive order. Per the official White House description, the order was aimed at cutting the size of the federal government - eliminating waste and bloat while empowering American families, workers, taxpayers, and the government itself. The President said DOGE had found billions and billions of dollars in waste, fraud, and abuse, as he stated it, and questioned judges who, in his words, wanted to stop the search for corruption.
Musk, speaking with his son X beside him, said the goal of DOGE was to restore democracy by closing the feedback loop between the people and the government: if the people’s elected representatives - the President, the Senate, and the House - do not decide what happens, the country lives in a bureaucracy rather than a democracy, as he stated it, adding that the federal bureaucracy had to be responsive to the people.
Why it matters
The Feb. 11 signing is the DOGE program’s defining Oval Office session: the workforce order signed with Musk at the desk, and both men’s stated rationale - waste figures from the President, a democracy argument from Musk - on the record together.
