What happened

President Donald Trump signed a proclamation aboard Air Force One on Feb. 9, 2025, declaring the day the first ever Gulf of America Day, as the aircraft flew over the waters his earlier executive order renamed from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, carried on the White House channel en route to Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans. The cabin announcement noted it was the first time in history an Air Force One flight had crossed the recently renamed gulf.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, aboard for the signing, said his secretarial order had directed the U.S. Geological Survey to update the federal geographic-names database, that the change had just become official, and that his team was calling the map providers - Google Maps, Apple Maps, “all the map people” - so the new name would take effect that afternoon, as he stated it. In questions afterward, the President declined to discuss his call with President Putin beyond saying the war would never have happened on his watch and that progress was being made, said no foreign buyer could hold a majority stake in U.S. Steel, and restated his Gaza proposal in the terms he had used that week: that the United States would own the strip as “a big real estate site,” rebuild it slowly with investment from wealthy regional countries, and that Hamas would not be there, as he described the plan.
