What happened
HUD published a second, distinct early workforce address under the title ‘Secretary Scott Turner Delivers Day 1 Remarks to HUD,’ separate from the February 6 workforce remarks paged on this site. HUD’s description states that Turner delivered the remarks on his first day at the department. In the address, a transcript of which was reviewed for this page, Turner said he was honored and humbled to be HUD’s 19th secretary, thanked his family, his pastor and President Trump — noting, as he put it, that there would be no Secretary Turner without President Trump — and described HUD’s mission as expanding opportunity and helping people become self-sufficient rather than dependent on government.
Why it matters
Together with the February 6 workforce remarks, this Day 1 address is the founding statement of Turner’s HUD: the mission framing — opportunity, self-sufficiency, and service to urban, rural and tribal communities — that his later program actions have repeatedly cited back to.
