What happened
HUD published Secretary Scott Turner’s remarks to the department’s workforce under the title ‘Welcome to HUD: Secretary Scott Turner Delivers Remarks to the HUD Workforce.’ HUD’s description states that Turner addressed the workforce on how he will make housing affordable. In the address, a transcript of which was reviewed for this page, Turner thanked the President for the opportunity to serve, said he had taken the oath of office the day before, outlined his own path from professional football through the Texas legislature and the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council, and told staff that HUD’s work is about people and families and advancing opportunity so Americans can achieve self-sufficiency.
Why it matters
A new secretary’s first workforce address sets the department’s tone and priorities. Turner’s was his opening statement to the staff who run HUD’s housing and community-development programs — that his affordability agenda would be carried out by the department’s own people, in partnership with local communities.
