What happened
President Donald Trump addressed the National Prayer Breakfast gathering at the U.S. Capitol on Feb. 6, 2025, carried on the White House channel, thanking congressional leaders of both parties in the room - Speaker Johnson, Leader Thune, Leader Scalise, Senator Schumer, Senator Hassan, and Congressman Jeffries among those he named. “We have to bring religion back,” the President said. “We have to bring it back much stronger. It’s one of the biggest problems that we’ve had over the last fairly long period of time.”
He traced the theme through American history as he told it: Thomas Jefferson attending Sunday services held in the House chamber, Roger Williams making religious liberty part of the bedrock of American life, and George Washington calling Americans to join together in prayer. He said the fundamental freedom of religion must be protected “with absolute devotion,” and pointed to the Capitol statue of Reverend Billy Graham - whose Crusades his father had taken him to at Yankee Stadium - as a figure his administration’s honors would celebrate, as he described it.
Why it matters
The Capitol breakfast remarks are the President’s faith-and-public-life statement in the term’s third week, delivered to the congressional audience itself: religious liberty as bedrock, and a pledge to bring religion back stronger, stated as administration intent.
