What happened

President Donald Trump signed executive actions on Jan. 30, 2025, carried on the White House channel, in a session the President called quite an important signing held the day after the Potomac aviation disaster. The first item, as presented at the desk, was the formal commission appointing a Deputy Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration - a very capable and highly regarded figure in the industry and in government, as the presenter described him - who would act as Administrator while that position remained vacant.

The second item was a presidential memorandum titled Immediate Assessment of Aviation Safety, which, as presented, orders the Secretary of Transportation and the acting FAA Administrator to assess the damage done to aviation safety by the prior administration’s DEI policies and to ensure that FAA hiring, in keeping with the President’s Jan. 21 memorandum, selects only the most outstanding and capable people - elevating competence over everything else, as the memorandum was described. Asked whether race or gender played a role in the tragedy, the President answered: “It may have. I don’t know. Incompetence might have played a role,” and said the standard was the most competent people regardless of race, as he stated it.
