What happened
President Donald Trump visited Asheville and western North Carolina on Jan. 24, 2025, carried on the White House channel, meeting families who lost homes to the hurricane and the volunteers who have been helping them, including Franklin Graham of Samaritan’s Purse, who spoke of the help that has come to western North Carolina and East Tennessee. The President said he had promised during the campaign that he would come back to western North Carolina to help, and that he was there to deliver on that promise.
He said the Army Corps of Engineers was being readied for the work — “You need your riverbanks fixed. You need a lot of roads fixed. And we’re going to get it done in rapid time” — and that he had asked Susie Wiles and his staff to get the Corps ready to go, as he stated the steps. He criticized the prior response, saying the FEMA people had left residents high and dry, in the account he gave, and that his administration was going to change that around.
Why it matters
The North Carolina visit, five days into the term and paired the same day with the California wildfire tour, is the President’s first on-the-ground recovery pledge — Army Corps speed and a reworked FEMA posture, as he stated them, are the claims this chronicle tracks from here.
