What happened

President Donald Trump spoke to reporters upon departure from the White House on Jan. 24, 2025, carried on the White House channel, en route to North Carolina and then Los Angeles. Of North Carolina, he said the hurricane damage had been allowed to sit too long — it “should have been done months ago,” nearly four months after the storm, as he stated the case — and of Los Angeles, that the fire could have been put out and the water had not been let flow, as he put it.

Asked about the March for Life taking place that day, he said Vice President Vance was there representing the administration very well, and, asked how his administration would protect life, he pointed to the pardons he had just signed releasing 23 people he said were unjustly prosecuted in pro-life cases — “they will be released and they’ll be out very shortly” — as he stated the action.

Why it matters

The departure remarks are the day’s itinerary in the President’s own framing before either stop: two disaster sites he said the prior response had failed, and the pardon action he carried into the March for Life afternoon.
