What happened

President Donald Trump addressed the World Economic Forum at Davos by video on Jan. 23, 2025, carried on the White House channel, four days into his term, introduced to the Davos community by the forum’s leadership. He recounted his first days’ actions as he listed them — withdrawing from the Paris Climate Accord, ending the electric vehicle mandate, declaring a national energy emergency, and beginning what he called the largest deregulation campaign in history.

His message to business was stated plainly: “Come make your product in America, and we will give you among the lowest taxes of any nation on Earth.” But, he continued, “if you don’t make your product in America, which is your prerogative, then, very simply, you will have to pay a tariff” — differing amounts, directing, as he projected it, hundreds of billions and even trillions of dollars into the Treasury. He also asked Saudi Arabia and OPEC to bring down the cost of oil, saying that if the price came down, the Russia-Ukraine war would end immediately, as he stated the linkage.

Why it matters

The Davos address is the administration’s economic doctrine delivered to its most skeptical room in the term’s first week: the tariff pledge, the energy emergency, and the oil-price theory of ending the Ukraine war, all as stated on Jan. 23, 2025, are founding entries for this chronicle’s scoreboard.

Scoreboard watch

Scoreboard candidate: the Davos tariff pledge and the oil-price/Ukraine-war claim as stated on Jan. 23, 2025 — flagged for the scoreboard/promise record (review-gated).
