What happened

President Donald Trump signed a batch of executive orders in the Oval Office on Jan. 23, 2025, carried on the White House channel (uploaded Jan. 24). Staff presented an order on artificial intelligence described in the room as announcing the administration’s policy to make America the world capital in artificial intelligence, and an order on cryptocurrency forming an internal working group to make America the world capital in crypto under David Sacks’s leadership, as the orders were described as he signed them.

He then signed pardons for 23 people, as staff stated the number — people, the President said, who were prosecuted and should not have been prosecuted, many of them elderly. Lastly, he signed an executive order ordering the declassification of files relating to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — “a lot of people are waiting for this long — for years, for decades. And everything will be revealed,” as he stated it, directing the pen to Robert F. Kennedy Jr. In questions afterward, he discussed troops at the southern border and repeated his position on January 6, as aired.

Why it matters

The Jan. 23 signing session compresses four of the term’s opening storylines into one sitting — AI and crypto policy, the pro-life pardons, and the declassification order that starts one of this chronicle’s longest-running document watches.
