Tulsi Gabbard Resigns as Director of National Intelligence

Tulsi Gabbard resigned as Director of National Intelligence, submitting her resignation on May 22, 2026 and publishing her letter the same day. Her service in the office ended in June 2026. This chronicle states no reason for the resignation: the reporting on it conflicts, and no reason is recorded here.

Gabbard had led the Office of the Director of National Intelligence — the office that coordinates the work of the intelligence community — since her confirmation in February 2025. The succession ran through an acting period: Bill Pulte, the Federal Housing Finance Agency director, served as acting DNI from June 2026 until Jay Clayton, the President’s nominee for the office, was confirmed by the Senate and sworn in on August 3, 2026 (see the August 3, 2026 entry).
