Stephen Miran Resigns as Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers
Stephen Miran resigned as chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers on February 3, 2026. Miran had been on unpaid leave from the CEA since September 2025, when President Trump appointed him to the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors to fill the seat vacated by Adriana Kugler, for a term that expired on January 31, 2026; governors may serve past a term’s end until a successor is confirmed, and Miran remained on the Board.
The resignation kept a commitment made during his Fed confirmation. “I promised the Senate that if I should stay on the Board past January, I would formally depart the Council,” Miran wrote in his resignation letter, dated February 3 and reviewed by Reuters. “I believe it is important to stay true to my word while I continue to perform the job at the Federal Reserve to which you and the Senate appointed me.” White House spokesman Kush Desai confirmed the resignation the same day, in the words carried by the Associated Press: “In accordance with the pledge he made to the Senate during his confirmation to the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors, Stephen Miran has submitted his resignation from the Council of Economic Advisers.”
Pierre Yared served as the CEA’s acting chair after Miran’s departure; Christopher Phelan was nominated to the chair on April 21, 2026. Miran’s Federal Reserve tenure itself ended in May 2026, when he resigned from the Board to clear the seat for incoming Chair Kevin Warsh; he rejoined Hudson Bay Capital in June 2026.
