What happened
President Donald Trump took questions from reporters at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland on October 21, 2026, traveling with former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield, whom he introduced as “one of the greatest fighters ever in the world” and who had joined him at the day’s rally.
The President said Steven Hubbard, the American held in Russia, had just landed after his release, and that he expected to meet him at the White House “over the next day or so.” Of President Putin’s role he said: “He was very good on it… He didn’t ask for anything back.” On Ukraine, he said the settlement effort was “the closest I’ve seen to maybe working out a settlement,” adding: “I think they both want it… There’s been a lot of death. They’re losing 25,000 people a month and even more than that,” as he stated the figure. On Iran, he said the United States was not negotiating at the moment but that “we are going to have something one way or the other. It’ll happen fairly soon,” with most observers expecting it after the election, as he put it.
Why it matters
The gaggle records three live threads in the President’s own words on the same afternoon: a completed prisoner release he credits to his request to Putin, his most optimistic public framing yet of the Ukraine talks, and a hardening deadline posture toward Iran. This chronicle files it on the Foreign Policy & Defense hub with every claim attributed to the President.
