What happened
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth visited Sierra Nevada Corporation in Dayton, Ohio, on October 20, 2026, as part of his “Arsenal of Freedom” tour, in full remarks published by APT. He called for faster weapons production, expanded American manufacturing and an overhaul of Pentagon procurement, urging defense contractors to invest in new factories, equipment and workers and promising longer-term orders for companies that expand production and deliver military systems faster, according to APT’s account of the remarks.
Hegseth criticized bureaucratic delays and said the department would complete a full audit before 2028 — “Before 2028, we will pass a full audit of the Department of War,” as Forbes Breaking News carried the line from the same remarks. He highlighted autonomous warfare, robotics, secure military communications and the next-generation Survivable Airborne Operations Center (SAOC), the aircraft platform designed to preserve presidential command and control in a crisis, and reiterated the administration’s proposed $1.5 trillion military investment and a call for at least $350 billion in additional reconciliation funding — figures APT notes reflect proposals and funding priorities described in his remarks. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink joined the visit, and Senator Bernie Moreno also took part, according to the Financial Express account.
Why it matters
The Dayton stop is the Arsenal of Freedom tour’s procurement doctrine stated to the industrial base itself: speed and expanded capacity in exchange for longer orders, an audit deadline for a department that has never passed one, and the autonomy-and-command systems the department is prioritizing — all commitments now on the record in the Secretary’s own words.
