What happened

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent appeared on Fox & Friends Weekend on October 11, 2026, in an interview the Treasury Department posted to its official channel, to lay out the economic campaign against Iran. After a year of maximum pressure, he said, the campaign is now “absolute isolation”: cutting Iran off from the outside world. “As of yesterday the score is approximately 1.2 billion barrels for the US, zero for Iran. Zero. Iran now has no oil on the water. They have negative cash flow.”

He described the rest of the squeeze as he stated it: Iran’s airline service to the world cut off, crypto seizures and maritime interdictions under way, Iran’s banks closed around the world, and a currency that has fallen from 600,000 to 2.8 million against the dollar. The United States and its partners destroyed 85 to 90 percent of Iran’s ability to regenerate its missiles and drones, he said, and because Iran imports gasoline despite its energy wealth, drivers there now face three-to-four-hour gasoline lines. The sequencing, he said, was six weeks of kinetic operations, then the blockade — “President Trump calls it the iron wall” — and finally the economic-outcast isolation.

Asked how it ends, Bessent said the President does not expect kinetic engagement at least until after the midterms, and that two to four months of blockade would bring Iran to “crying uncle” — his phrase, with the admission that he did not know the Farsi for it. The end could come by deal, by popular uprising, or by the IRGC turning on itself: “I don’t know how this ends.” The interview also took up the decision to ease Russian sanctions to put more diesel fuel on the market, which Bessent would defend in detail on Meet the Press a week later (paged separately on this site).

Why it matters

Bessent is the architect and public explainer of the Treasury-run half of the Iran campaign — the sanctions, seizures and isolation he brands economic warfare — and this interview is his most complete statement of its scoreboard and its theory: that a one-commodity economy cut off from oil revenue, aviation and the dollar system collapses from inside.

Scoreboard watch

Scoreboard watch: the isolation campaign’s claims as stated on October 11, 2026 — approximately 1.2 billion barrels moved for the United States against zero for Iran, no Iranian oil on the water, and a two-to-four-month horizon for the blockade to bite. Flagged for the scoreboard editor; no entry is published from this page.
