What happened

Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered remarks from the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, on October 7, 2026, in an address carried by the State Department. “There are great ruins all across the world,” he began — places where “history seems to have exhausted itself.” “But the Acropolis is different. For thousands of years, the civilization that built what stands behind me has captivated the imagination of the Western world.”

Rubio told the story of 480 BC: Xerxes’ armies putting Athens’ sanctuaries to the torch, the handful of Athenians who barricaded themselves in the rocky fortress for a last stand, and the survivors who buried the broken remains in the hill and, decades later under Pericles, raised the Parthenon. “For 25 centuries since, the Parthenon has stood,” he said. “Empires have risen and fallen beneath its shadow” — while the heirs of Athens and Rome “have carried their civilization with them to the ends of the Earth,” to the American republic he was there representing.

Why it matters

The Acropolis address is the set-piece speech of the Secretary’s European swing and the administration’s civilizational argument in its most literary form: America as the living heir of Athens and Rome, delivered standing in front of the Parthenon — the remarks his Breitbart interview days later set out to explain.
