What happened

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent sat for The Axios Show on October 3, 2026, recorded in the Treasury Building’s Cash Room and posted to the department’s official channel. Host Mike Allen opened bluntly: an AP poll puts approval of the President’s handling of the cost of living at 17%, and gas is $4.41 a gallon. Bessent did not dispute that Americans feel squeezed — “I’m not going to do what the Biden people did and tell the American people how good they had it” — but argued the underlying numbers are strong: food-at-home inflation at 2.2%, median wage increases of 3.5 to 3.7%, and, per the largest banks, spending strongest in the bottom two quintiles of wage earners. He compared his job to an emergency room doctor’s: “The American people were backed over by the inflation Mack truck.”

On Iran, he described his branded campaign — “Operation Economic Outcast” — and the national-security weight the Treasury job now carries, crediting the sequencing of kinetic operations and economic isolation. On financial-system defense, he described “Golden Eagle,” a clearinghouse formed at Treasury through which banks from the mega-banks down to community banks share cyber-defense practices. On AI, he argued for “safe acceleration”: the administration reviews frontier models before release, intervened once (the Anthropic Fable case, as he described it), and holds that labs asking to be absolved of liability should slow down themselves — “kind of like Hannibal Lecter: stop me before I kill again.” He said AI is already producing a proliferation of one-to-three-person startups, visible in record applications for tax ID numbers at the IRS, which he oversees.

On the bond market, Allen pressed him on his “I am the house now” remark. Bessent did not retreat: “The house doesn’t win every hand. The house plays the percentages.” The rise in yields, he said, is global, and U.S. bond performance since the President took office has been the best in the world, as he stated it.

Why it matters

At 42 minutes, the Axios interview is the longest sit-down of Bessent’s October media run and the one where his portfolio’s breadth shows: cost of living, economic warfare on Iran, bank cybersecurity, AI oversight and bond-market management, all from the Treasury’s Cash Room. It is the fullest single statement of how the Secretary sees the job.
