What happened

Secretary of State Marco Rubio sat for a full interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, published by the State Department on September 29, 2026. It opened with the weekend’s incident in the United Kingdom involving terror suspects and a U.S. air base: Rubio called it “a very serious situation” that “clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor,” said he was limited in what he could say publicly, thanked the British authorities for their cooperation, and noted American engagement over reports that some of the suspects had been released on bail.

On Iran, Rubio argued that a regime animated by its ideology “can never possess a nuclear weapon, because they will use it to blackmail the world,” credited President Trump with doing what other presidents said but never did in preventing that, and — picking up Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s comments on Iran’s dwindling ability to raise cash, as Hannity cited them — agreed that the Iranian economy “are there now, and they’re heading there fast to a cataclysm.” The closing stretch covered Greenland, whose geography he called “so critically important to our national security,” and Cuba: “Cuba has already fallen,” he said — “a failed state in every sense of the word.”

Why it matters

The Hannity sit-down is the Secretary’s most direct televised statement of the administration’s Iran rationale and its Cuba verdict, delivered to a friendly audience in the middle of UN General Assembly week — the public argument, in his own words, behind the pressure campaigns his department is running on both files.
