What happened
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent appeared on Fox News’ Special Report with Bret Baier on September 23, 2026 — the eve of President Trump’s meeting with President Xi, who had just landed in Washington — in an interview the Treasury Department posted to its official channel. Bessent said he had met China’s vice premier and lead economic negotiator for about 12 hours the previous Sunday in New York, with unfinished business carried into a further meeting that morning.
The headline: the two sides agreed to extend the economic détente reached at Busan — “the Busan agreement,” as he called it — which had been scheduled to end November 10. “That is going to be extended until January 10th to give us more time to see what we can do on the economic front.” Pressed on whether a bigger deal can be done in two months, he was measured: some Chinese deliverables “have not been perfect,” and Washington wants to see over the coming months whether Beijing enacts the agreement more fully. For the presidential meeting he previewed possible movement on the “30 by 30” board-of-trade concept — tariff relief on roughly $30 billion of non-critical goods on each side — and financial-services purchases. On agriculture, he said China has agreed to buy 25 million tons of soybeans and has been “very good thus far” at meeting this year’s obligations, with about $17 billion of other commitments running behind schedule, as he stated them.
On the domestic economy, he split inflation in two: a headline energy supply shock from the Iran conflict, and core inflation that “has actually moved down” to 2.4%, the lowest in five years, as he and Baier stated it — alongside the strongest PMI reading since 2021 and over a million private-sector jobs created, as he stated them.
Why it matters
The détente extension is a dated, checkable commitment made by the Secretary himself on the record the night before a presidential summit: the trade truce now runs to January 10, with soybean tonnage and $17 billion of lagging Chinese commitments named as the measures of compliance.
Scoreboard watch
Scoreboard candidate: the extension of the Busan economic détente from November 10, 2026 to January 10, 2027, as announced by Secretary Bessent on September 23, 2026 — and the compliance figures he attached to it (25 million tons of soybeans; roughly $17 billion of other Chinese commitments behind schedule).
