What happened
Ambassador Mike Waltz announced on May 14, 2026, that the United States would contribute an additional $1.8 billion in humanitarian assistance through the United Nations, at a briefing with the State Department’s foreign assistance chief Jeremy Lewin and U.N. humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher, according to the Associated Press and Reuters reporting of the announcement. PBS NewsHour carried the announcement in full. The contribution builds on the $2 billion “Humanitarian Reset” agreement reached with the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in December 2025, bringing total U.S. support under the framework to $3.8 billion across 21 crisis-hit countries, according to the State Department.
“These funds will save more lives around the world but also drive forward the reforms that we put in place for efficiency, accountability, and lasting impact,” Waltz said, according to the Washington Examiner’s account. The funding is reserved for life-saving aid to victims of natural disasters and famine and people “truly in critical need,” and will be allocated over the coming year, according to the Associated Press. Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the contribution, saying it would help aid agencies reach millions of people in the most urgent crises, per the same reporting. Waltz also said the United States had paid $159 million toward the U.N. regular budget in January and that an additional substantial tranche was coming soon, according to Reuters.
Why it matters
The announcement is the funding half of Waltz’s U.N. doctrine: continued American humanitarian leadership — the United States remains the U.N.’s largest single national donor — explicitly conditioned on the efficiency and accountability reforms he is pressing in New York. It is also the second installment of the post-USAID aid architecture, routed through U.N. pooled funds.
