What happened

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Air Force Gen. Dan Caine and Jules Hurst III, performing the duties of the Undersecretary of War Comptroller and Chief Financial Officer, testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee on the War Department’s FY27 budget request in Washington on April 30, 2026, according to the Department of War’s published description. The department published the hearing on May 1, 2026; a shorter department upload of the same hearing is recorded as an alternate source.

Why it matters

The Armed Services Committees authorize the department’s programs before the appropriators fund them, and the SASC hearing is the Senate authorization-side examination of the FY27 request. Recorded on the Foreign Policy & Defense hub with the HASC hearing of April 29 and the May 12 appropriations hearings, it completes Hegseth’s FY27 budget-testimony series.
