What happened
Vice President JD Vance delivered campaign remarks in Rocky Mount, North Carolina on March 13, 2026, introduced by Senate candidate Michael Whatley and Small Business Administrator Kelly Loeffler, who also spoke. Loeffler credited the administration’s “fair trade, low tax, low regulation agenda” with driving job growth and said the working family tax cuts — no tax on tips, overtime or Social Security, plus immediate expensing for small business — were “rocket fuel for Main Street,” as she described them.
Vance, recalling his Marine Corps years in eastern North Carolina, made the economic case in his own terms: new home purchases at their highest in five years, rents down six months in a row, and “the average tax refund that’s going to come to the people of North Carolina about $3,700 per family,” as he stated the figure. He polled the crowd on three accomplishments — the Social Security tax cut, the under-$100,000 tax cut, and accurate local crime reporting — then argued Rep. Don Davis had voted against each, and against the Save America Act, which Vance described as making it “impossible for illegal aliens to vote in our elections.” He closed the case for the ticket: voters should send Whatley to the Senate over former Governor Roy Cooper and elect Lori Buckhout to the House.
Why it matters
Rocky Mount is the Vice President’s midterm campaigning in its purest form on this record — the tax bill and the Save America Act carried into a battleground Senate race, with the SBA Administrator making the Main Street version of the same argument. It is recorded on the Elections & Governance hub.
