What happened

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump hosted the White House Women’s History Month event on March 12, 2026. The First Lady spoke first, on women’s influence on “their children’s character education and morals” and on her own career across fashion, publishing and film, urging young women entrepreneurs to “be courageous and take risks,” as she put it. The President sent condolences to the Detroit-area Jewish community after an attack on a synagogue that morning, said the Iran situation was “moving along very rapidly,” and thanked the women officials in the room, among them Second Lady Usha Vance, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, Attorney General Pam Bondi and Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer.

His substantive claims, as he stated them: “we’ve created more than 300,000 jobs now filled by proud, hardworking American women,” and “the number of women-owned businesses increased by 1.2 million last year alone” — both, he said, records. He tied the numbers to the tax law: “no tax on tips, no tax on overtime and no tax on Social Security for our great seniors,” and spotlighted a North Carolina waitress and single mother in the audience as a beneficiary of the no-tax-on-tips provision. His history passage — “from Martha Washington to Betsy Ross, from Clara Barton to Amelia Earhart, and Rosa Parks to Aretha Franklin” — framed the administration as “working every single day to make America better, safer and more prosperous for women.”

Why it matters

The Women’s History Month event is the administration’s working-moms pitch in one room: the First Lady’s entrepreneurship message on top, and the President’s jobs and tax figures underneath it, delivered on National Working Moms Day. It is recorded on the Elections & Governance hub.
