What happened

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump participated in the dignified transfer ceremony at Dover, Delaware on March 7, 2026, receiving six fallen American service members killed in the conflict with Iran. The White House broadcast of the ceremony carries no audio of remarks — the transfer was conducted in silence, as is customary. A White House clip of the same ceremony records that Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance also attended.

The President had announced the trip in his Shield of the Americas remarks in Miami earlier that day, saying he would be “leaving for Dover, very sad situation, to greet the families of the heroes, you know, coming home from Iran.” Two days later, at the fire fighters’ legislative conference, Vice President Vance described having participated in the transfer and asked for prayers for the six, and for “the seventh soul who will be coming home tonight” — the count of the fallen as the administration stated it that week.

Why it matters

The Dover transfer is the first of the Iran campaign to draw the President, the First Lady, the Vice President, and the Second Lady together — the human cost of Operation Epic Fury entering this chronicle at the top of the administration, in the same week its military claims dominate the record. It is recorded on the Foreign Policy & Defense hub.
