What happened

President Donald Trump hosted Inter Miami CF, the 2025 Major League Soccer champions, at the White House on March 5, 2026, accompanied by club owner Jorge Mas and Lionel Messi. Before the celebration, the President gave an extended update on Operation Epic Fury, as he stated it: “Their navy is gone. 24 ships in 3 days,” their air force, air defense, and communications destroyed, and missiles and launchers down “about 60% and 64% respectively,” with a launcher struck within four minutes of firing. He said the administration had announced decisive action the day before to keep down oil prices, including political risk insurance for tankers transiting the Gulf, with further action he called imminent. He renewed his call on the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, military, and police to lay down their arms — “Accept immunity. We’ll give you immunity” — and urged Iranian diplomats to request asylum. He also cited the Dow reaching 50,000 in his first year as a record set ahead of schedule, and thanked Secretary of State Marco Rubio for his work, including on Cuba.

The ceremony itself retraced the club’s run, as the President recounted it: Luis Suárez’s solo goal against the top Brazilian club, and the FC Porto match at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, where Messi’s free kick sealed what the President called the first victory by a North American club over a European club in official competition. Mas spoke of his family’s flight from communism and of the club’s ambition to stand with the elite of global football. The team presented the President with a number-10 jersey, a ball for the Oval Office, and a limited-edition pink watch etched with his name, and the President invited the team into the Oval Office.

Why it matters

Championship visits are ceremony, but this one doubled as a war briefing: the day-5 Epic Fury tallies, the tanker-insurance measure, and the immunity offer to Iranian forces were all stated from this podium before the trophy talk began. It is recorded on the Elections & Governance hub with the administration’s other champions receptions.

Scoreboard watch

The President’s statements at this event — 24 ships in three days and missiles and launchers down about 60 and 64 percent, as stated; the political risk insurance for Gulf tankers; and the standing immunity offer to Iranian forces who lay down their arms — are recorded here for the weekly scoreboard. The scoreboard entry itself remains review-gated.
