What happened
President Donald Trump delivered the 2026 State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress on February 24, 2026 — the first of the nation’s 250th-anniversary year. “Our nation is back — bigger, better, richer, and stronger than ever before… This is the golden age of America,” he said, and closed his opening account with the line the address is built around: “the state of our union is strong.”
His first-year record, as he stated it: the border secure, with zero illegal aliens admitted in the past nine months and fentanyl flow down 56 percent; the murder rate’s largest decline in recorded history; core inflation down to 1.7 percent over the last three months of 2025; gasoline below $2.30 a gallon in most states; mortgage rates the lowest in four years; 53 stock-market record highs since the election; more than $18 trillion in investment commitments against less than $1 trillion in the prior four years; oil production up more than 600,000 barrels a day and more than 80 million barrels received from Venezuela; and 2.4 million Americans lifted off food stamps. He credited tariffs for much of it and said, of the Supreme Court’s tariff ruling four days earlier, that the deals would “remain in place under fully approved and tested alternative legal statutes” and that congressional action would not be necessary.
The address’s announcements, as he made them: a “war on fraud,” begun four months earlier, to be led officially by Vice President JD Vance, with Minnesota’s fraud losses put at an estimated $19 billion; a new federal retirement offer — from next year, workers without an employer matching plan would get access to a federal-worker-style plan with the government matching contributions up to $1,000 a year; the Ratepayer Protection Pledge, under which major tech companies would provide their own power for AI data centers (signed at the White House on March 4, paged separately); and calls on Congress to codify his most-favored-nation drug pricing, pass the Delilah Law barring states from granting commercial driver’s licenses to illegal aliens, pass the Stop Insider Trading Act, approve the Save America Act, end sanctuary cities, restore full border and homeland security funding, and make permanent his executive-order ban on large Wall Street firms buying single-family homes. In the gallery sections, he announced a Presidential Medal of Freedom for Olympic goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, awarded Coast Guard rescue swimmer Scott Ruskin the Legion of Merit for Extraordinary Heroism during the address, presented the first TrumpRx customer — whose IVF drug, she reported through his account, fell from $4,000 to under $500 — and honored the Angel Families he had hosted at the White House the day before.
Why it matters
The 2026 State of the Union is the administration’s own index of its first year and its second-year assignment sheet: the fraud war, the retirement match, the ratepayer pledge, and the legislative list that much of this site’s scoreboard now tracks were all stated here, in one address, in the President’s words. It is recorded on the Elections & Governance hub.
Scoreboard watch
This is a major candidate batch for the weekly scoreboard: the war on fraud under Vice President Vance, the up-to-$1,000 retirement match, the Ratepayer Protection Pledge, and the tariff-continuity claim after the Supreme Court ruling, all as announced in the address, alongside the first-year figures as stated by the President. The scoreboard entries themselves remain review-gated.
