What happened

Vice President JD Vance delivered remarks alongside Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Yerevan, Armenia on February 9, 2026, at a signing of a joint statement on the completion of negotiations on an agreement for peaceful nuclear cooperation between the two countries — signed by Pashinyan for Armenia and Vance for the United States, per the ceremony announcement on the official upload.

Pashinyan called it “the first visit by a U.S. Vice President to the Republic of Armenia,” taking place “in the context of unprecedented realities of establishing peace and stability in the South Caucasus.” He traced the partnership to their first White House meeting on February 7, 2025 and the August 8, 2025 Washington Peace Summit, through which, “with the personal involvement of President Trump, we established peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan,” and noted that he and President Aliyev had jointly nominated President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. In his closing remarks he returned to that first meeting: the instructions Vance gave that day, he said, “had reached Yerevan before I reached Yerevan,” which he offered as “a sign of a particular manifestation of responsibility and professionalism.” The session closed with a shouted press question on whether military strikes on Iran remained on the table, which went unanswered on the upload.

Why it matters

The Yerevan visit institutionalizes the Armenia half of the Caucasus peace framework — a strategic partnership and a peaceful-nuclear-cooperation track — a year to the week after the first Vance-Pashinyan meeting set it in motion. It is recorded on the Foreign Policy & Defense hub.
