What happened
President Donald Trump took questions from reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Palm Beach, Florida on January 31, 2026, returning from the Alfalfa Club dinner in Washington. On Iran, he said he could not disclose his decision, “but we do have very big, powerful ships heading in that direction as you know,” adding: “I hope they negotiate something that’s acceptable” — a deal “with no nuclear weapons.”
On his Federal Reserve chair nominee, Kevin Warsh, the President said he based the choice “on quality,” that Warsh “should have no trouble getting” confirmed and might draw Democratic votes, and that he had sought no commitment on rates: “I hope he’s going to lower them… but he’s going to have to do what he wants to do. No commitments. I don’t want to do that.”
Why it matters
The gaggle is an early marker in two threads this chronicle follows closely: the Iran confrontation that ran through 2026, and the Warsh succession at the Federal Reserve — here, the President’s own statement that his chair was chosen without a rate commitment, a line later set against the Fed’s September 2026 rate increase.
