What happened
President Donald Trump signed executive orders at the White House on January 30, 2026, headlined by the order bringing American motor racing to the capital for the 250th birthday of the United States. Joined by Roger Penske — “a legend in many different things, but certainly in racing,” the winner of the Indianapolis 500 twenty times, the President noted — he announced the Freedom 250 Grand Prix: “We’re celebrating greatness with American motor racing… It’s going to take place on August 21st through the 23rd.”
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, whose department handles the permitting side of a Washington street race, was brought in to speak at the signing. The President also noted the morning’s economic numbers, saying that for the first time in 28 years “America made more steel than Japan,” and citing more than $18 trillion in investment commitments.
Why it matters
Freedom 250 is the administration’s year-long 250th-birthday program, and this order is its marquee Washington spectacle — a street race past the national monuments, run through Secretary Duffy’s Transportation Department. The event was later previewed on this site in the President’s July 13, 2026 Grand Prix showcase.
