What happened
President Donald Trump convened a cabinet meeting at the White House on January 29, 2026 — “our first cabinet after the year,” opening his administration’s second year. “We’ve had an amazing year… I want to thank my entire cabinet for 12 months of unprecedented achievements,” he said, arguing the first year was, in his words, the most successful first year of any administration in American history, achieved despite the Democratic shutdown, which he said cost about a point and a half of growth.
His headline claims: the murder rate had seen “the biggest drop ever recorded,” at its lowest level in 125 years; crime was “way down”; and the border had recorded “zero illegal aliens being admitted into our country for the last eight months.” He credited the Venezuela operation to General Caine and his staff — “nobody’s ever seen anything like it” — and said relations with Venezuela’s leadership had become “very strong, very good.”
Why it matters
The first cabinet meeting of year two is the administration’s own summary of year one, delivered on camera by the President to the full team this site tracks. Its claims — murder rate, border admissions, growth lost to the shutdown — are the baseline figures the scoreboard checks as 2026 develops.
