What happened

President Donald Trump stopped at the Machine Shed Restaurant in Urbandale, Iowa, on January 27, 2026, ahead of his Clive remarks, and took questions from reporters among the diners and local farmers. A local voice corrected his gasoline figure upward in Iowa’s favor — “$1.89 in Iowa, sir” — and the President adopted it: down from “$4.50, $3.50, $5.00, all over the place” when he took over.

On Minnesota, he said Border Czar Tom Homan had met with the governor and would meet the mayor, “and it’s going very well,” and attributed Minnesota’s falling crime to federal removals: “we took out thousands of criminals out of Minnesota and that’s why it’s good.” Asked about the Minneapolis shooting, he called it “a very unfortunate incident” and said of the man who was killed that “he shouldn’t have been carrying a gun.” On the border, he stated that for eight to nine months “nobody crossed the border” unlawfully. On farm support: “just recently, we gave the farmers $12 billion because they were treated unfairly by foreign countries… You know where I got it, tariffs.” On the dollar, he said he wants it to “just seek its own level.” He also described the United States as “a very strong presence in Venezuela” and Cuba as “a nation that’s very close to failing.”

Why it matters

The stop is the administration’s Iowa day in miniature — farm payments, fuel prices, and the Minnesota enforcement operation argued in person — and it carries the President’s first extended on-camera comments on Homan’s Minnesota mission and the Minneapolis shooting, in the border portfolio this site tracks through Homan and Secretary Markwayne Mullin.

Scoreboard watch

Scoreboard watch: the dated figures stated here — $12 billion in recent farm payments ($66 billion in total, per the exchange at the table) funded from tariff revenue, and eight to nine months of zero unlawful crossings — are tracked claims for the record.
