What happened

President Donald Trump took questions from reporters at the White House on January 27, 2026, before departing for Iowa. He opened with Syria: he had “had a great conversation with the highly respected president of Syria,” he said, and matters concerning Syria and the region had “worked it out very, very well.”

On Minnesota, he said Tom Homan was meeting with the governor and the mayor and that he heard “that’s all going very well.” Asked about the Minneapolis shooting, he said: “I love everybody. I love all of our people. I love his family. And it’s a very sad situation,” adding, “you can’t have guns. You can’t walk in with guns.” On the economy, he said he would like to see interest and mortgage rates go down, with energy, fuel and grocery prices already falling. On Gaza, he noted the return of the last hostage: “we got all of the hostages back, both living and dead, and a lot of people thought that was impossible.” On Ukraine and Russia, he said “very good things are happening.” Asked about Venezuela’s president reportedly refusing his orders, he said he had not heard that and that “we have a very good relationship.”

Why it matters

Departure gaggles are where this President narrates several live files at once — here the Syria relationship, the Homan mission to Minnesota, and the completed hostage return — each a standing thread in the portfolios of Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the border team this site tracks.
