What happened

President Donald Trump took questions from the traveling press aboard Air Force One on January 22, 2026, en route to Joint Base Andrews at the close of his Davos trip. On China, he laid out the year’s summit calendar in his own words: “I’m going in April. He’ll come toward the end of the year. And I look forward to seeing President Xi.” He described the relationship as now “an excellent relationship” after the strain of the Covid period, and pointed to farm purchases: “Look at all the farm product they’re buying now. Soybeans — they’re buying a lot of soybeans. That makes our farmers happy, and that makes me happy.”

He defended the border record at length — “The border’s the best we’ve ever had. The border’s the best there is anywhere in the world” — and, in a closing exchange that drew laughter, explained the bruising on his hand: “I clipped it on the table,” he said, crediting the large-dose aspirin he takes: “when you take the big aspirin, they tell you, ‘You’ll bruise.’”

Why it matters

A presidential trip to China in April and a return Xi visit are the year’s two largest scheduled diplomatic events, stated here on the record by the President himself at the close of the Davos trip. China policy runs through Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and the farm-purchase claim ties the relationship directly to the agricultural record this site tracks.
