What happened

President Donald Trump held a bilateral meeting with the President of Switzerland in Davos on January 21, 2026. The Swiss president welcomed him — “Davos without you, it’s not truly Davos” — and thanked him for appointing Ambassador Callista Gingrich, saying “she do a real very good job.” President Trump replied: “I want to thank my team for having worked out a very fair deal with Switzerland, and it’s an honor.”

The Swiss president said the two sides were “working hard to finalize the agreement,” called himself optimistic that the joint agreement could go forward, and said the investment pledge and private-sector promise were “on the way,” citing a last statistic of an 8.8 billion surplus “in the favor” of the United States as the imbalance the President had raised was, in his words, “on correction.”

Why it matters

Switzerland is one of the trade files the administration settled by negotiation rather than escalation, and this brief meeting is the public marker of it: a deal the President calls very fair, a finalization still being worked as stated by the Swiss side, and an investment pledge attached.
