What happened

President Donald Trump held a pull-aside with the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, in Davos, Switzerland, on January 21, 2026. “We have a fantastic relationship with Egypt,” the President said, adding that the two countries “always are able to work out the relationship right.”

President Sisi, speaking through interpretation, thanked the President for a year of achievements and credited him directly on the Gaza file: without President Trump, he said, the war in Gaza would never have ended. He asked the President to continue sponsoring the file until the announced plan is fully achieved, welcomed the announced second phase as very important to move forward positively, and said Egypt was glad to take part in the Board of Peace and would exert every effort to make the initiative succeed.

Why it matters

Egypt is a central party to the Gaza settlement the Board of Peace was chartered the next day to carry forward, and this exchange puts Egypt’s president on record — in Davos, in front of the press — crediting the President with ending the war and committing Egyptian support to phase two.
