What happened

President Donald Trump personally opened the White House press briefing on January 20, 2026 — “the anniversary, first anniversary, January 20th” of his second inauguration — before Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt took questions. “Wow, that’s a big crowd. It’s a lot of people. I think it’s like a record,” he began. “We have a book that I’m not going to read to you, but these are the accomplishments of what we’ve produced — page after page after page, individual things. I could stand here and read it for a week and we wouldn’t be finished. But we’ve done more than any other administration has done by far, in terms of military, in terms of ending wars, in terms of completing wars.”

The President pointed to Minnesota, then in the news, saying his people were “apprehending murderers and drug dealers and a lot of bad people,” and displayed recent cases as he discussed them. The extended session — two hours and thirty-four minutes as published by the White House — is the administration’s own first-anniversary accounting, delivered from the briefing-room podium.

Why it matters

A president taking the podium himself on his inauguration anniversary is the administration’s set-piece summary of year one, and this chronicle keeps the full briefing as the record of what the White House chose to claim at the one-year mark — inside Leavitt’s tenure at the podium, which ended with her departure on August 27, 2026.
